NFPA Seeks Nominations for James M. Shannon Advocacy Medal Award

QUINCY, Mass. — The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is calling for nominations for the 2022 James M. Shannon Advocacy Medal, which recognizes fire- and life-safety advocates who have made significant contributions in lessening losses from fire, electrical and other hazards.

Named for former NFPA President James Shannon, the award honors individuals or groups that champion cost-effective efforts and collaboration, while furthering NFPA’s mission. As part of his long list of advocacy achievements in fire loss reduction, Shannon led the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes, paving the way for legislation on minimum fire safety standards for cigarettes in each state.

“This reward is to give thanks to all the recipients for taking action to improve life safety,” says Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “The hard work and dedication these recipients display towards improving safety in communities is invaluable.”

NFPA considers nominees who are members of the fire service or any individual or group whose advocacy efforts meet the award’s criteria. The medal recipient will be announced later in 2022. Previous recipients have worked to increase use of sprinklers, advocated for the use of updated codes, and other activities.

In 2021, NFPA announced Gary Keith, former president of the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC), and longtime employee of NFPA and FM Global, as the winner of the medal. During his impactful career, Keith helped lead NFPA field efforts on the Fire-Safe Cigarette Coalition; spurred on the use of updated codes and standards on numerous building and life safety issues; and acted as the guiding force behind many initiatives to increase the use of home fire sprinklers.

The 2022 nominee application is available for download and can be sent to publicaffairs@nfpa.org until the submission period closes on Feb. 18.

Minnesota AG Calls for Cancellation of Home Security Contracts for Alleged Fraud

STEARNS COUNTY, Minn. — Bring Me the News reports that Minnesota’s Attorney General, Keith Ellison, says he’s gotten consumers in Stearns County out of home security contracts after they were misled by a door-to-door salesman. According to the report, Ellison’s office announced that home security companies Skyline Security Management and Safe Home Security have agreed to their cancel contracts with customers in and around Stearns County who purchased their systems from door-to-door salesman Gary Harvey. “Door-to-door salesmen and their employers are in the business of trust-building,” Ellison said in a statement. “They know they need to have your trust to sell you their products, particularly expensive products like security systems that are supposed to keep your home safe. When that trust is betrayed, it’s emotionally and financially painful.
