10 Major Security Mergers and Acquisitions From 2021

It’s not surprising that COVID-19 slowed M&A activity last year. However, the deal-making made a strong comeback in 2021, as we saw more than 130 deals sealed — compared to around 70 last year.

It was also clear that companies weren’t afraid to throw around their money. Seven out of the 10 deals here involved more than a billion dollars. And that’s not counting security industry-adjacent deals that saw Nortek strike a $3.6 billion deal to sell its indoor air quality businesses, or IT solutions firm SYNNEX Corp. merge with competitor Tech Data in a deal worth about $7.2 billion.

The largest deal of 2021 actually took place during the first week of the year when Teledyne acquired FLIR in a cash and stock transaction valued at approximately $8.0 billion. That is almost twice as much as last year’s biggest deal, which saw Allied Universal acquire G4S for $5 billion in what seemed like a never-ending saga.

A trend that we have seen over the past few years of businesses outside the industry snapping up security companies continued in 2021. Four of the deals on this list involved a private equity or investment firm and there were many more throughout the year.

As we approach the end of the year, the deals continue to come in fast and furious. At the time of this writing, there have been 19 acquisitions in December alone. Top 10 Security Stories From October 2021: China Ban Gains Steam, Vivint Countersues ADT

October saw its fair share of legal issues and acquisitions. This month, lawsuits involved home security companies, a gunshot detection provider and even a media company. Vivint Smart Home is seeking retribution for the lawsuit ADT filed against it last year that alleged Vivint salespeople go to ADT customers’ homes, get them to sign Vivint contracts and install the company’s alarm systems in their homes under false pretenses. Vivint had requested a motion to have that lawsuit dismissed, but when the judge denied the motion, Vivint launched a countersuit claiming it is in fact ADT that is deceiving and stealing its customers. Minnesota AG Calls for Cancellation of Home Security Contracts for Alleged Fraud

STEARNS COUNTY, Minn. — Bring Me the News reports that Minnesota’s Attorney General, Keith Ellison, says he’s gotten consumers in Stearns County out of home security contracts after they were misled by a door-to-door salesman. According to the report, Ellison’s office announced that home security companies Skyline Security Management and Safe Home Security have agreed to their cancel contracts with customers in and around Stearns County who purchased their systems from door-to-door salesman Gary Harvey. “Door-to-door salesmen and their employers are in the business of trust-building,” Ellison said in a statement. “They know they need to have your trust to sell you their products, particularly expensive products like security systems that are supposed to keep your home safe. When that trust is betrayed, it’s emotionally and financially painful.
