SIA’s Virtual GovSummit Proves Essential for Government-Focused Integrators

The inability to attend industry events during the pandemic has been unfortunate, but one of the positive things to come of it has been the pivot many organizations have done to continue to bring value to the marketplace through virtual versions. Moreover, this shift has allowed broader audiences access to the presentations and information than ever before, and for much less cost.

Such is the case for the PSA-TEC event beginning tomorrow, a five-day hybrid conference with live onsite sessions (most being streamed), a handful of onsite-only presentations and lots of on-demand content. This is another great opportunity for those who maybe have never participated in this marquee convention to check it out.

Similarly, the Security Industry Association (SIA) produced the first day of its GovSummit 2021 on April 28, which in a particularly unique structure will have its second- and third-day agendas deployed on June 9 and Sept. 21.

Although I have not been able to travel in recent years to the onsite edition of this conference, in this format I was pleased to be able to now attend. With a host of subject matter experts and government officials among the speakers, the material is essential for security contractors to the federal and local government markets.

Among the pertinent segments for security integrators was “The American Rescue Plan Act, Infrastructure Modernization and the Role of Safety and Security Solutions,” which included panelists from Convergint Technologies and Motorola Solutions.

They addressed COVID-19 relief measures, costs, impacts and opportunities, highlighting how, where and when billions of dollars of relief funding could help the security industry.

Looking out through 2024, the group noted security needs and likely allocations in not only all levels of government but also the education and critical infrastructure sectors.

Among the systems and solutions in demand: contactless access control, including biometric credentials; surveillance camera expansions/upgrades; video analytics for social distancing, people-counting/occupancy detection; exposure reporting tools, and license plate recognition; cybersecurity; temperature screening/thermal imaging; PSIM; communications equipment; and technology maintenance/service.

Top 10 Security Stories From October 2021: China Ban Gains Steam, Vivint Countersues ADT

October saw its fair share of legal issues and acquisitions. This month, lawsuits involved home security companies, a gunshot detection provider and even a media company. Vivint Smart Home is seeking retribution for the lawsuit ADT filed against it last year that alleged Vivint salespeople go to ADT customers’ homes, get them to sign Vivint contracts and install the company’s alarm systems in their homes under false pretenses. Minnesota AG Calls for Cancellation of Home Security Contracts for Alleged Fraud

STEARNS COUNTY, Minn. — Bring Me the News reports that Minnesota’s Attorney General, Keith Ellison, says he’s gotten consumers in Stearns County out of home security contracts after they were misled by a door-to-door salesman. According to the report, Ellison’s office announced that home security companies Skyline Security Management and Safe Home Security have agreed to their cancel contracts with customers in and around Stearns County who purchased their systems from door-to-door salesman Gary Harvey. “Door-to-door salesmen and their employers are in the business of trust-building,” Ellison said in a statement. “They know they need to have your trust to sell you their products, particularly expensive products like security systems that are supposed to keep your home safe. When that trust is betrayed, it’s emotionally and financially painful.
