How Integrators Can Fight Business-Crushing Legislation

There are many challenges for integration business these days and while it may be difficult to prioritize proposed regulations that seem like somebody else’s problem, integrators should be very aware that there is a trend toward regulations sweeping across the country that can absolutely limit their ability to do business.

NSCA has worked for years fighting against legislation that might limit integrator’s impact to work. It’s a difficult challenge, as each state has the ability to implement its own restrictions and regulations, forcing a fight on multiple fronts to keep integrators able to install systems.

In an upcoming webinar on April 6 at 12:00 ET, SSI sister publication Commercial Integrator, NSCA, and the Connected Technologies Consortium will get together to discuss pertinent legislation and information integrators need to be aware of.

Topics will include:

  • Licensing restrictions and other regulations that could prevent “low voltage” integrators from working on systems that include Power over Ethernet.
  • Prevailing wage: Multiple states are looking to expand the definition of what a “job site” is, which could impact cost of labor. That could include prebuilding systems, driving to and from job sites and service work.
  • Cybersecurity legislation could require integrators to have a commissioning certificate before working on clients’ network-touching systems.
  • Proposed regulations around employees and customers being exposed to COVID.
  • Legislative trends that could be positive for integrators such as Alyssa’s Law for panic alarms in public schools.
  • An overview of how to get involved and use NSCA’s “Track Legislation” page to stay updated.

NSCA is happy to work with other industry leaders to battle these bills but states want to hear from you (voters, taxpayers, local businesses) so a grassroots effort is essential. “If you’re not at the table, you’re likely on the menu,” is a premise that integrators should keep in mind.

Make sure to register now and learn about all of the ways integrators like you can do your part to combat legislation that might hurt your business, and bolster legislation that could help your business grow.
