Top 10 Security Stories From February 2021: ADT’s Ackerman Deal, 3G Sunset Updates

Unsurprisingly, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the security industry (as well as many others) to put the brakes on M&A deals. With the vaccine rolling out and restrictions being lifted around the country, it looks like things are starting to return to normal.

So far we’ve seen around a dozen mergers or acquisitions since the start of 2021. Two of the more notable happened in February.

The first most popular in terms of pageviews was ADT’s acquisition of Ackerman Security System’s existing customer accounts in a cash deal worth $73 million. Under terms of the transaction, the super-regional dealer will join the ADT Authorized Dealer Program and sell and install ADT smart home security services to its new customers.

The biggest deal in terms of money transferred goes to Eaton’s acquisition of Tripp Lite, a leading supplier of power quality products and connectivity solutions, for $1.6 billion. The deal is the second priciest transaction of the year so far, only behind Teledyne’s $8 billion deal for FLIR in January.

Another popular topic in February was the pending 3G sunset. Verizon announced a new 3G sunset date, while experts from the industry gave insight into how dealers can best prepare for it.

Additional popular stories in January include SSI‘s RMR Deep Dive, top smart home and security trends from CES 2021, and more. You can view all these stories in the slideshow.
